OK, maybe I'm wrong about your friends specifically, but many people in the United States seem to have the wrong idea about living in Europe. They see the beautiful architecture, clean mass transit, low crime, great restaurants, fabulous museums, and assume they cannot afford it. They could not be more wrong. In fact:

Retiring in Europe would likely be more economical than living in the States. Yes, you could probably live a healthier, more adventurous life in Paris, London, Lisbon, Greece or any number of European locales than if you remained in the U.S. for your golden years.

There are many reasons why this is true. Let's take a look at the biggest points.

You don't need a car! America is car dependent. Most cities, towns, and villages in Europe are not. You can walk, take a bus, or take the subway in big cities. Look at this image. There are dozens of cafes, stores, groceries, etc. within a few city blocks of this same location. Do you see any cars? No, most European cities have areas where no cars are allowed. Of course, if you have a scooter, that is no problem. No car means no monthly payment, no maintenance, no oil changes, and no insurance. Saving hundreds of dollars every month for even the casual driver.

The walking also keeps you healthier. It's very easy to walk every day when the environment is safe, made for walking, and holds interesting things to look at and enjoy. Imagine walking to the grocery store as you pass by museums, parks, and street musicians. It's much better than walking on the treadmill at Planet Fitness. There is a reason life expectancy in Europe is higher than in the U.S.

Health Insurance and medicine. Medical costs in the United States continue to rise. Medications are through the roof, and the costs associated with private health insurance is very high. This is not the case in Europe. Health insurance is very affordable, AND medications are generally subsidized keeping costs low. This is another reason life expectancy is higher in Europe.

Rent. Just like the U.S. housing prices vary greatly depending on where you are looking. However, just check out the monthly rentals on www.airbnb.com and you will find beautiful homes in great locations. Want to walk to the beach in Alicante, Spain? I just saw one for $1008/month - FURNISHED! How about Paphos, Cyprus? I just looked at one for $883/month - also furnished. If you are willing to go up to $2,000, you will be amazed at the luxury accommodations available to you! It's like this over most of Europe: Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Croatia are some of the biggest bargains, but you can find moderately priced places in France and Italy too.
